Lighting Guide

Natural light, artificial light, and how to shape both. Key, fill, backlight, and the logic behind building a clean exposure on set.

Overview

A light modifier is anything you attach to a light source to change its quality. A bare flash or LED throws harsh, direct light with sharp shadows, unflattering on skin and hard to control. Modifiers shape and soften that light, turning a harsh source into something beautiful. The core concept to grasp is the difference between hard and soft light, not brightness, but the quality of the shadow edges: soft light has smooth, gradual transitions, hard light has sharp, defined ones.

The key principle is source size: the larger your light appears relative to your subject, the softer the light, which is why the sun is harsh on a clear day but soft through overcast cloud. Distance matters just as much as size: the closer and bigger the modifier, the softer and more wrapping the light. A large softbox at 4 metres can be harder than a small reflector up close.

What's Inside
  • Hard vs soft light is about shadow edges, not brightness, and source size plus distance control it
  • Softbox + grid, soft but controlled light that won't spill onto the background: studio portraits and interviews
  • Softbox (no grid), soft, even, forgiving light; the best single modifier to start with, for headshots and product
  • Bare reflector, hard, punchy, high-contrast light that shows texture: fashion editorial and dramatic portraits
  • Lantern, soft, wrap-around, near-shadowless light with a natural feel: on-location and environmental portraits
  • Beauty dish, semi-hard 'poppy' light with a signature ring catchlight: beauty, makeup and fashion
  • The distance rule: closer + larger = softer; a big softbox far away can be harder than a small one up close
  • Beginner tips: master one large softbox placed closer than you think (~60–90cm), feather the edge, and check the catchlight in the eyes
